Singaporean film Ilo Ilo wins prestigious award at Cannes
Ilo Ilo, a Singaporean film, which was worked on by Zhe Wu, who has a long standing relationship with Shepperton Studios, won the Camera d’Or award for Best First Feature, becoming the first Singaporean movie to win at the Cannes Film Festival.
Zhe Wu worked as the Sound Designer and Re-Recording Mixer for Ilo Ilo, a film that explores the relationship between a young boy and his maid set in Singapore during the 1997 Asian financial crisis. The movie stars Malaysian actress Yeo Yann Yann, television veteran Chen Tianwen and award-winning Filipino actress Angeli Bayani. The feature was mixed in Shepperton’s Theatre 3 and Theatre 4.
Directed by Anthony Chen, the film received a 15-minute standing ovation. Zhe said
“The Pinewood Studios Group is very generous in helping young filmmakers. Even though we were working throughout the Christmas holidays, we still had the technical support that we needed. Personally the best thing about mixing at Shepperton was the creative environment it provides. You are surrounded by top level mixers and editors, and they are very warm and helpful - we even recorded some extra foley sounds that we didn't get right first time around! The theatre was accurate, and I am very happy with how my mix translated into the cinema at Cannes. All was not possible without the support of The Pinewood Studios Group."
