Pinewood welcomes the publication of 'A Future For British Film'

Andrew Smith, Group Director for Corporate Affairs at the Pinewood Studios Group, welcomes the publication today of 'A Future For British Film' which addresses the key issues currently being faced by the UK film industry.

The extensive consultation with industry colleagues by Lord Smith and his panel proved to be an extremely valuable exercise and gives the final report significant credibility.

The report's recommendations for skills and talent development are important as are its comments on partnership working and industry-led collaboration. The Review suggests that "in public policy terms, it may be strategically advantageous to support industry-led, more organic collaborative ventures rather than design a 'top-down' solution: using public funding to empower practioners to test their own ideas." This reflects a scheme that Pinewood has initiated recently to invest in lower budget British films. The Company is working in partnership with production companies and other partners to provide funding and studio facilities and is a good example of how the private sector can help support and champion UK talent.

In addition, and of particular importance for the facilities sector, are the conclusions on implementing an international strategy. We are operating in an increasingly competitive, global industry and as the UK continues to grow and mature, it needs to look at how to take advantage of emerging and developing markets.  The review calls for "a robust, cohesive international strategy for UK film" including "opportunities for greater engagement with Europe; and also with existing co-production partners as well as other territories offering creative commercial collaboration." We endorse this sentiment wholeheartedly. Pinewood is itself expanding it's offering at home and abroad to ensure we continue to grow, attract international business and remain competitive and profitable.

We now look forward to the government's response.
