‘Channel 4’s Alternative Election Night’ was a live nine hour show presented by Jeremy Paxman and David Mitchell. A host of special guests joined in the all-night action in the studio and around the country including Richard Osman, Adam Hills, Aisling Bea, Gary Gibbon, Cathy Newman, Roisin Conaty and Romesh Ranganathan
The show was a Zeppotron / ITN co-production, based in Pinewood’s TV Two with a large set with three presentation areas. There was an audience of 300 in attendance throughout the show.
The show was complex with reports from locations around the country – polling stations, party headquarters, and so on, provided by the Channel 4 and ITN news teams. The reports from these diverse locations were uplinked using four different satellites and down-linked at Pinewood utilizing 5 dishes and a mobile satellite truck. (It was 3 satellite dishes on a mobile satellite truck and 2 fixed dishes at Pinewood). Up to fourteen signals could be down linked and routed into Pinewood’s technical facilities at one time.
Signals were monitored in a hub installed for ITN by Pinewood’s Engineering team, where four 6 x channel EVS XT3 systems recorded the signals to be clipped ready for play-out into the studio or to air. Four VizRt graphics systems were located in this hub and the gallery, providing show graphics, statistical graphics, and rolling results. ITN also installed an iNews scheduling system to help carry the burden of scheduling of such a long show.
During the first half of the show Pinewood’s TV Two passed live on air to an ITV studio which was live with the ‘Last Leg’, whilst ‘Channel 4’s Alternative Election’ host Jeremy Paxman chatted with ‘Last Leg’ host Adam Hill before the Last Leg team took to the air for 15 minutes.
